Pet Rats

The pet rat is interesting, intelligent and interactive animal to have in your life.  To give you an example of how much they can be human like, a lady come to tell me a storey recently.  We have some pet rats in store at the time and sometimes they can choose to sleep on their backs like humans do, with their tummies and legs upright.

The lady said she tapped on the glass to say Hello to the rat that was sleeping, he woke up and gave the lady a look like "excuse me I'm sleeping" and went straight back to sleep, they are just so human like and intelligent. When you have some time check out some you tube video's of their antics and ticks that they get up to and can learn, quite amazing.

For your pet rat just choose an enclosure that is made for pet rats, this way they should have enough room, you can also pop some bedding into absorb their urine and droppings, plus including a hammock or tunnel or pouch (they love these to hang out in), an igloo for making a nest and an exercise wheel and of cause a food bowl and water dispenser.

When you come to picking your next best friend, remember to pick two they do like to have a pet rat companion, and then simply pick the one's that are interested in you and want to interact with you.  It is very obvious when it comes to interacting with your potential rat, some will and some will definitely not be interested in you and want nothing to do with you - so choose the want that is interested and wanting to be your friends, he's the best choice to become the you next family member.

When choosing food for your pet rat their is more and more options all the time, do be conscious that not all options are made as a complete and balanced diet.  We do have our own mouse and rat mix that was created many years ago and the pet rat love and thrive on it plus we do keep the Australian Vetafarm pellets in store as well.  Do remember to provide fruit and veges into their diet options everyday as well.

Also remember to include a salt lick, a mineral lick and a have chew like a non splintering wood, or a lava star or a loofah rope chew available (attached to the side) so they can pull and rip into it when ever they feel the need.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are an excellent option for a family pet, again you are best to have 2 or more, they don't (generally) like to be on their own, and two of the same gender are totally fine to be together.  You can house your guinea pigs inside or outside or both in and out, depending on the weather and home environment.

Remember providing a safe and dry environment is key to keeping happy and healthy pet Guinea Pigs.  They do not like the extreme cold or the extreme heat, so do move them indoors and out of these weathers when they arrive.  We do now have many different styles of enclosures for Guinea Pigs, purely indoors, purely outdoors or styles that can transition from indoors to outdoors and so on.  Also the exercise pens are a great option to add onto an enclosure or to use for a play/outdoor time in the sun and picking through the grass.

Pets Galore created our own fresh Guinea Pig complete diet mix many years ago, nowadays there is many on the market, just be careful that they are truly complete diets.  Vetafarm cavy pellets and Oxbow Guinea Pig pellets are both kept in store.  Also, to keep the digestive system moving through properly we keep 2 Oxbow hay's and a local hay and further a Woombaroo pellet that serves the purpose of the hay's in the Guinea Pigs diet.

Remember to include a salt lick, a mineral lick and a have chew like a non splintering wood, or a lava star or a loofah rope chew available (attached to the side) so they can pull and rip and caw into it when ever they feel the need, these techniques also help to keep Guinea Pigs teeth from growing to long.

There is a few items that you can pop into the enclosure to keep your Guinea Pigs enclosure more interesting, especially an igloo, they do absolutely love to utilise a igloo.

Pet Mice

The pet mouse is a beautiful gentle and interesting small animal.  Great as a starter, they can be handled or not, however they will certainly like the human companionship if you would like to provide it.  Hands down the pet that to many times to count I've been told by a parent, "I only got the mice because my child wanted them, but they are so lovely a pet. Like the pet rats they can also learn heaps of tricks, especially with a food reward, so check out some you tube video's of their antics and ticks that they get up to and can learn, quite amazing.

We at Pets Galore, have been breeding our own pet mice for many years, this way we have a lovely quite and interactive personality for you to have as your friend as well as having a great variety of coats, colours and varieties. We only have females out on display but do ask if you would like males as we do often have chooses as well.  Females are great as they do not produce any smell, the smell that mice are known for is the male producing a hormone to attract the girls they can smell.

For your pet mouse simply choose an enclosure that is made for pet mice, this way they should have enough room, plus you can also pop some bedding into absorb their urine and droppings, and a hammock or tunnel or pouch (they love these to hang out in), an igloo for making a nest and an exercise wheel and of cause a food bowl and water dispenser.

When you come to picking your next best friend, remember to pick two they do like to have a pet mouse companion, and then simply pick the one's that are interested in you and want to interact with you.  It is very obvious when it comes to interacting with your potential mouse, some will and some will definitely not be interested in you and want nothing to do with you - so choose the want that is interested and wanting to be your friends, he's the best choice to become the you next family member.

Land Hermit Crabs

The humble hermit crab - they are great and very easy pets to keep.  Their big difference is that they are nocturnal animals, so you will not see or hear them out and about during the day.  We set these small animals up in an enclosure big enough for all their equipment.  So they need a cool zone which is where we place the food bowl, the fresh water bowl and the salt water bowl.  Then they need a warm zone (heated by a heat pad or a heat bulb) and this where we pop the cave or home to hid in so they can have a nice deep hiding spot.

The hermit crabs are extremely slow growing, so they do not eat much at all - adding a treat of a piece of apple they will come over a have a nibble at.  The fresh water (de-chlorinated) is provided for the hermit crabs to drink, and the salt water is provided for the hermit crabs to bath in.  Remember to provide these waters in very shallow bowls so they do not have any issues with drowning.

Also remember to provide empty shells, a couple of shapes and sizing just a bit larger than they are in now, that way when they are ready to move into their new shell there is some options for them. Overall as very good value and easy pet to have in your home.
